One of the great things about living in Barcelona is its proximity to excellent skiing opportunities.

Since it’s been snowing a lot, my wife and I decided to take our boys skiing. What I saw happening this time vs. prior times is that they are not just embracing their newfound skills but that they want to learn more, more, more!

That’s exciting.

So you’ll understand my enthusiasm about all of this, let me take you back a couple of years. In fact, watch this quick video I made after our trip!

In the beginning we fall…

The first time I took my kids skiing they didn’t want to go. Heck, they didn’t even want to try! They cried and were a little scared. In short, they did not want to learn this new thing… this new skill.

You may wonder why we were so intent on having the boys learn this new skill.

It really starts in my own youth growing up with my parents. You see, I grew up with working-class parents who struggled to keep our heads above water. You can read my story in my free eBook.

The wonderful thing is that both my parents measured their success in life is by seeing their children get to do and enjoy things they didn’t get to do growing up. For me that means skiing.

It’s a great sport. Beyond that, the ski lodge and the slopes are great places to network.

So my wife and I gently nudged our kids along, leading them down the bunny slope. We signed them up for lessons where they’d be with likeminded beginners. We watched as they fell but didn’t rush to pick them up.

They fell a lot at first.

And they cried, trying to get out of learning how to ski.

But quickly they were able to stay in the standing position. They didn’t fall as often. They started smiling and laughing. The boys were slowly embracing their new skill. They even began to look forward to their next time on the slopes. They kept going and didn’t give up, which makes me proud.

As we learn new skills we have to keep going…

Now… just a couple of years later… my kids still fall down, but they don’t cry. They get back up and they don’t quit. They keep falling and they keep getting up!

As proud parents, my wife and I are happy to report that our little guys are getting pretty good. But there’s something even more exciting…

My oldest son is actually asking for feedback from me. But he doesn’t stop there. He listens to what I tell him and he does those things, makes those adjustments and does a whole lot better. In other words, he applies what he was learning!

Most recently, my oldest boy got to move up into the next level in his training. Boy, is he excited! Not just that, but he is really eager to keep going and moving up the ladder of success in this new skill of skiing.

Are you like my boys?

Maybe you’re like my young sons.

Maybe you are just learning about real estate as a great investment tool. Or maybe you want to learn how to do what I do as a long-distance investor who uses other people’s money to fund my multifamily properties. (This strategy gives really good returns to my investors, BTW, so it is a win-win.)

If so, you’re just like me. You’re just like everyone who is learning new skills.

When I first started out in real estate investing I didn’t know what I was doing. I fell a lot. I looked silly, because I didn’t know the words to use to explain to investors what I was doing, and I didn’t know how to look for the best properties with the highest returns.

While I know all of those things now, it took a lot of practice and doing and talking and learning to get here.

In short, I had to keep getting back up till I knew what I was doing!

But that’s the reality, isn’t it? In anything we do that’s new we have to be resilient. It helps if we have a mentor and take their feedback, applying what they tell us and making adjustments so we can get to the next level.

If you’re just learning about all the fantastic and exciting opportunities in real estate investing, all I can say is keep going.

There’s no getting around the hard work and practice part. You just have to keep doing it!! (If I can be of assistance in any way, I invite you to reach out to me.)
